Devoted to the art of classical music, Gabriel Martins is a Sphinx and CAG winner, based in Charleston, S. C. Lauded for his “rich, warm” and “mesmerizing” sound, Martins carries a cello concerto repertoire spanning every major work. He will join the Aiken Civic Orchestra for a performance of Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor. The cello comes to life in each movement, including the solo cadenza in the Allegretto and brilliant scale passages in the Finale. Also on this concert is the Overture to La Clemenza de Tito by Mozart and Symphony No. 104 ‘London’ by Haydn. The Overture to la Clemenza de Tito is a masterful reflection of the ceremony it was commissioned for, the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia. Written during his time in London, Haydn’s final symphony known as the “London Symphony” highlights the abilities of the orchestra with the opening Adagio, a lyrical Andante, Menuetto with a Trio section, and a spirited Finale.
